The screenshot organizer that never uploads a pixel
A private screenshot library for developers, designers and QA. Drop in captures, file them in nested collections, tag them, and find any of them by the words inside. It all stays in this browser.
- Stored on your deviceIndexedDB, no account, no server copy
- Search inside imagesAI reads the text on demand
- Share without hostingShare sheet, ZIP, PDF or one-file gallery
Loading your vault… (it needs JavaScript, because the library lives in your browser).
Why a dedicated screenshot manager beats a folder
Your operating system drops every capture into one folder with a timestamp for a name (see where screenshots go on each device). After a sprint of bug reports that folder holds hundreds of files called Screenshot 2026-09-14 at 10.42.17, and the only way to find the checkout error is to open them one by one.
ScreenVault adds the three things a folder lacks:
- Meaningful titles and tags you can edit in place, and bulk-apply to a whole selection.
- Collections inside collections, so “QA / Sprint 42 / Safari” is a real place, and one screenshot can still carry tags from other axes (#p1, #checkout).
- Search across everything: titles, notes, tags, collection names and the text in the image itself, with filters like
#bug,in:sprintand-draft.
The screenshot organizing guide suggests a naming and tagging scheme that holds up for QA teams.
Built for how each role works
Developers
Paste an error straight from the clipboard, read its stack trace into searchable text, and copy it back out as text for the issue tracker.
QA testers
Capture the screen from the browser, mark up the defect, file it under the build, then diff it against the last good build.
Designers
Keep references and review rounds in collections, then frame them for a deck or bind them into a PDF for sign-off.
Where your screenshots actually live
“No upload” is not a slogan here; it is a consequence of where the files go. When you drop a screenshot in, the browser writes the original file into IndexedDB, a database each website gets inside your browser profile, fenced off from every other site. ScreenVault also writes a 480-pixel thumbnail so the grid stays fast.
The browser decides how much room a site gets. Chrome and Edge allow a site up to roughly 60% of total disk; Firefox allows up to about 10% of disk (or 10 GiB) for best-effort data; recent Safari versions allow a similar large share of disk, while older ones started near 1 GiB. Pick a typical screenshot to see what that means for your device:
a 1920×1080 desktop capture of a mostly flat app UI: about 350.0 KB.
This browser does not report its quota.
Room is not the same as safety. Flip between the two storage modes the web platform defines:
When the disk runs low, the browser may evict a whole site’s data, least-recently-used first, without asking. Safari can also delete script-written storage for sites you have not visited in seven days of browser use. Fine for a scratchpad; risky for the only copy of evidence for a bug report.
Your status right now: unknown. Quota rules are from the WHATWG Storage Standard and the MDN “Storage quotas and eviction criteria” page.
Questions
Where are my screenshots stored?
In your browser’s IndexedDB storage on this device. ScreenVault has no server-side storage and no accounts, so nothing is uploaded when you add, tag, search or export screenshots.
Can I search the text inside screenshots?
Yes. Open a screenshot and press “Read text & suggest tags”. A downscaled copy of that single image is sent to an AI model through Vercel AI Gateway, the transcribed text is saved next to the screenshot in your browser, and from then on the search box matches words inside it.
How do I share screenshots without uploading them?
Select screenshots and choose Share (uses your device’s share sheet where supported), ZIP, PDF or HTML gallery. The gallery is a single self-contained HTML file you can attach to a ticket or email; it opens in any browser with no server.
Can my team use the same library?
Not live: there is no server to sync through. Teams share by exporting a ZIP backup (it includes titles, tags, notes and collections) that a colleague restores into their own vault, or by sending an HTML gallery.
Will clearing my browser data delete the vault?
Yes. Clearing site data for screenvault.dev, or a browser evicting storage under disk pressure, removes it. Press “Make storage persistent” to ask the browser not to evict it, and download a ZIP backup now and then.
How many screenshots can it hold?
That depends on your browser’s quota, which is usually a share of free disk space (often many gigabytes on desktop Chrome, Edge and Firefox; Safari is stricter). The storage meter in the sidebar shows what this browser allows.
