Windows: two shortcuts, two destinations

Win+PrtScn saves the whole screen straight to Pictures\Screenshots and briefly dims the display to confirm. Win+Shift+S opens the Snipping Tool overlay and copies the selection to the clipboard; newer versions also auto-save it to the same folder, which you can switch off in Snipping Tool settings. Plain PrtScn copies to the clipboard (or opens the Snipping Tool, if “Use the Print screen key to open screen capture” is on in Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard). If you use OneDrive, it may offer to save screenshots to OneDrive\Pictures\Screenshots instead.

Mac: Desktop, unless you tell it otherwise

Every macOS shortcut (⌘+Shift+3 full screen, 4 selection, 5 toolbar) saves a PNG to the Desktop. Add Ctrl to copy to the clipboard instead. To change the folder, press ⌘+Shift+5, click Options and pick a destination; the choice sticks for all the shortcuts.

Phones: the gallery app

Phones hide the file system, so look in the gallery. On iPhone, Photos collects them in the Screenshots album automatically. On Android the files live in Pictures/Screenshots (Samsung and some others use DCIM/Screenshots), and Google Photos groups them under Library.

Folders are where screenshots go to be forgotten

A timestamp is the only thing the OS knows about a screenshot. Once the folder passes a few hundred files, finding “that error from Tuesday” means opening them one by one. Dragging the folder’s contents into ScreenVault gives each capture a title, tags and a collection, and lets you search the text inside them, without uploading them anywhere. The organizing guide has a scheme that scales.
